Boxing
A Sport With History
Boxing is the competitive sport of the art of self-defence.
The Sport of Boxing was first written about over 2000 years ago
in 20 B.C. by Virgil the Roman poet when he retold the story of
the Trojans who participated in the sport and skills of boxing
about 1000 years before in the ancient city of Troy.
Roman Decay
By the end of the Roman era boxing was a gladiator sport
where a steel glove called a cestus was worn, and beaten boxers
seen as expendable items.
A Definite Need
Boxing as a sport re-emerged early in eighteenth century
England from the practical necessity of defending oneself with
the fists against thugs and thieves. The sport has undergone
many changes but the practical necessity for a person to defend
themselves has not. So called modern society in the 21st Century
still has thugs and thieves who do not respect their fellow man,
and as a country must be prepared to defend its people and
territory so must an individual.
Failure to be aware and prepared for a personal assault
places anyone in the position of becoming a statistic.
Various Rules
Rules determine how a game or sport is conducted. During a
contest adherence and control of the rules is by a participating
referee with contests decided by the failure of a boxer to
defend strikes by an opponent that connect to any part of the
front or sides of the head and body above the belt line.
'Old Olympic Style Boxing' and 'Professional Boxing'
contests can also be decided by a boxer being forced out of a
contest through being knocked down by a punch and unable to
continue within ten seconds of elapsed time. Both these boxing
formats have fatalities due to 'Rules' that allow boxers to be
'Knocked-Out' and as in Roman days the knocked out boxer is
expendable.
'White Collar Boxing®' and 'A.A.B. Golden Gloves Boxing®'
are conducted under 'A.A.B. Rules©' that focuses on the
artistic application of defence and point scoring skills by
utilising the 'Excessive Punching Rule'. That 'Rule' and scoring
system originated and developed by the Australian Academy of
Boxing has effectively eliminated 'Knock-Outs' by controlling a
contests power intensity. |
